About Freaky Tiki Charters

Fort Lauderdale boat days are supposed to be fun. We built Freaky Tiki to make them easier, safer, and a lot more memorable.

Freaky Tiki Charters is a private tiki-style party boat based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We specialize in group charters for birthdays, bachelorette parties, bachelor parties, corporate outings, family celebrations, sandbar days, sunset cruises, and pretty much any excuse to get your favorite people out on the water.

The whole idea behind Freaky Tiki is simple: your group should be able to stay together, relax, play your music, bring your drinks, enjoy the views, and actually have room to move around.

A lot of boat charters are great for small groups. But once your group starts getting bigger, planning a boat day can get complicated fast. You may have to split into multiple boats, cut the guest list down, or book something that does not really feel built for a celebration.

That is where Freaky Tiki is different.

Our boat was designed for bigger private groups who want the energy of a floating tiki bar, the comfort of a roomy party boat, and the peace of mind that comes with being on a properly inspected passenger vessel.

Freaky Tiki is a COI-inspected vessel, meaning it carries a U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection. That is a big part of who we are, and it is one of the reasons we can host larger groups in a way that is structured, professional, and safety-focused.

But do not worry. We are not here to make your boat day feel like a classroom safety lecture.

We are here to make sure the serious stuff is handled behind the scenes, so you can enjoy the water, the music, the drinks, the photos, the sandbar, and the people you came with.

Our Story

Freaky Tiki did not start as some giant corporate idea. It started the way a lot of good ideas do, bored college kids, dreaming of a life where they could have fun and and be excited to go to work every day. It wasn't until about five years after finishing up at the University of Maine, founder Azeem Sultan who had never quite kicked the dream of moving to Florida and starting a boat rental company decided to just do it. He quit his job sold most of his possessions hopped in the car and drove to Fort Lauderdale.

Azeem originally looked at the South Florida boating scene with the idea of getting into jet ski rentals. But after spending time around the local charter market, it became clear that Fort Lauderdale already had plenty of small boat options.

What it did not have enough of was a fun, private, higher-capacity boat experience for larger groups.

Fort Lauderdale is one of the best places in the country to be on the water. People come here for bachelor and bachelorette weekends, birthdays, family trips, corporate events, spring and summer vacations, and local celebrations. But groups often run into the same issue: they have too many people for a standard small charter.

Six guests is not enough for a lot of celebrations. Twelve guests is not always enough either. And splitting the group across multiple boats changes the whole experience.

The goal became to create a boat that could bring larger groups together on one private charter while still doing things the right way.

That is where the Freaky Tiki concept really took shape.

Instead of taking the easy route and buying a typical recreational boat, the team went after something more serious: a vessel that could be modified, inspected, and approved for larger passenger use. The boat that became Freaky Tiki started as a former water taxi, which gave it a strong foundation as a passenger-style vessel. From there gallons of blood, sweat and tears were dumped into the boat and it was slowly transformed into the tiki-themed charter boat guests know today.

That transformation was not just cosmetic.

Yes, the tiki look matters. The party layout matters. The bar-style setup, open-air feel, music, seating, bathroom, coolers, and floating mat all matter.

But the real work was in making sure the vessel could meet the standards needed for a U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection. That process involved safety equipment, vessel modifications, stability considerations, materials, required gear, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work that most guests never see.

And honestly, that is the point.

When you step onboard, you should notice the fun first. You should see the tiki boat, the water, the music, the coolers, the skyline, and your friends ready to have a great day.

The safety work should already be done.

Why We Built Freaky Tiki

We built Freaky Tiki for the groups that are too big for the average charter but still want a private, personal, fun experience.

We wanted something that felt more like a floating venue than a basic boat rental. A place where people could celebrate without feeling cramped. A boat where a bachelorette group could spread out, a birthday crew could turn up the playlist, a corporate team could relax outside the office, and a family could spend a few hours together on the water without overthinking every detail.

Freaky Tiki was made for real group energy.

People do not book us because they want a quiet ride from point A to point B. They book us because they want a boat day that feels like part of the trip. They want the photos. They want the music. They want the sandbar. They want to cruise through Fort Lauderdale and see the city from the water. They want to bring their own drinks, stock the coolers, and have a captain and mate handle the boat.

That is the experience we care about.

At the same time, we know that fun on the water only works when the foundation is solid. Fort Lauderdale is beautiful, but it is still a real marine environment. Weather changes. Tides matter. Boat traffic matters. Group size matters. Safety equipment matters. Crew matters.

So our approach is pretty straightforward:

Make the charter feel easy for the guest, but take the operation seriously behind the scenes.

What It Means That Freaky Tiki Is a COI-Inspected Vessel

This is one of the most important things to understand about Freaky Tiki.

A COI is a Certificate of Inspection issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. When a vessel is COI-inspected, it means the boat has been built hand in hand with a formal inspection process and has been approved to carry passengers under specific conditions. COI requirements include material types and alloys, thickness of fuel tanks, certification of fuel lines and hoses flammability of materials. There are thousands and thousands of different rules and regulations with which a commercial vessel has to comply.

That certificate is not just a piece of paper.

It outlines important details about the vessel, including things like passenger capacity, operating area, required crew, lifesaving equipment, fire safety equipment, and other safety-related requirements.

In plain English, a COI-inspected vessel has been reviewed as a commercial passenger vessel, not just treated like a regular recreational boat.

That matters because carrying a larger group on the water is different from taking a few friends out for a ride. The boat needs to be set up for the number of people onboard. It needs the right safety equipment. It needs appropriate crew. It needs to operate within approved limits. It needs to meet standards that go beyond the basics.

For Freaky Tiki, pursuing a COI was a big part of building the company the right way.

It took more time. It took more work. It took more investment. But it allowed us to create the type of charter experience we actually wanted to offer: fun, private, high-capacity, and built around safety from the start.

Why the COI Matters for Guests

Most guests do not wake up excited to talk about Coast Guard regulations. We get that.

You are probably more focused on the playlist, the drinks, the guest list, the weather, and whether everyone is going to make it to the dock on time.

But the COI matters because it affects the quality and safety of your day in very real ways.

It helps confirm the boat is approved for its passenger count.

A boat’s capacity is not just about how many people can physically fit onboard. Weight, stability, layout, escape routes, crew, safety gear, and operating area all matter. A COI-inspected vessel has a passenger capacity tied to an inspection and approval process.

It requires the right safety equipment.

A COI vessel must carry required lifesaving and fire safety equipment for its operation. That can include lifejackets, fire extinguishers, rescue equipment, and other items required for the vessel’s approved service.

It considers the crew needed to operate safely.

The Coast Guard looks at manning requirements for inspected vessels. That means the vessel has required crew standards based on the type of operation, route, size, and passenger load. All our crew members are all in random drug testing programs through the Coast Guard and are appropriately licensed for their positions.

It gives the charter a more structured operating framework.

A COI lays out what the vessel is approved to do. That includes how many people it can carry and where it can operate. For guests, that creates a more organized and transparent charter experience.

It gives larger groups a cleaner option.

Instead of trying to force a big group into a small-charter format, a COI-inspected vessel gives larger groups a proper path to enjoy a private charter together.

None of this means other types of charters are unsafe. It simply means Freaky Tiki was built for a different kind of group experience.

Inspected Vessels, Bareboat Charters, and 6-Pack Charters

Boat charter rules can be confusing, especially if you only book a boat once or twice a year. A lot of guests hear terms like “bareboat,” “6-pack,” or “inspected vessel” and have no idea what they actually mean.

Here is the simple breakdown.

What Is a 6-Pack Charter?

A “6-pack” charter is one of the most common types of small boat charters. It usually refers to an uninspected passenger vessel that carries up to six passengers for hire.

These charters can be great.

They are popular for fishing trips, small sightseeing cruises, family outings, couples’ trips, and smaller private groups. For the right group size, a 6-pack charter can be simple, personal, and exactly what you need.

The key thing to know is that a 6-pack charter is generally limited to six paying passengers. That limit is not about whether a boat has extra seats. It is about the type of charter operation and the rules that apply to it.

So when a group has 10, 15, or 20 people, a standard 6-pack charter usually is not the right fit. You may need multiple boats, a different charter structure, or an inspected vessel.

Freaky Tiki is different because it was built for larger private groups. Our COI-inspected status allows us to operate in a higher-capacity passenger vessel category.

That is not a knock on 6-pack charters. They serve an important purpose. They are just built for smaller groups.

What Is a Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter is another legitimate charter model, and it works differently from a standard captained passenger charter. The first and most important thing with a bareboat charter is the hard 12 passenger limit.

In a bareboat charter, the guest is essentially renting the vessel and taking control of it for the charter period. The charterer has more responsibility and usually has a role in choosing and paying the captain or crew separately.

That control piece is important.

A properly structured bareboat charter is not supposed to be the same thing as buying a ticket or booking a standard crewed boat trip. The charterer has possession and control of the vessel during the charter period. That can make bareboat charters a great option for certain private groups and yacht-style experiences.

The main difference is that a bareboat charter comes with a different legal structure and a different set of responsibilities for the person booking the boat.

For some guests, that flexibility is perfect. For others, especially larger groups that want a straightforward captained experience, a COI-inspected vessel may be the easier and cleaner option.

We hope when you take out the freaky Tiki, your able to see all the love and effort that went into building our business and we hope to expand and grow with our guests to continue to provide the best experience, Fort Lauderdale has to offer!
